Chances are at some point in your life, you’ve had a sinus infection. You are familiar with the headaches, pain and pressure caused by a sinus infectionsinus problem. There are professionals who can help like Dr. David Sycamore, your allergy specialist at Parkway ENT and Allergy in Katy, Texas.

Inflammation and infection of your sinuses can be bacterial, fungal, viral or from allergy issues. There are a few things you can do to prevent sinus infections, including:

  • Using a humidifier- to keep the air in your house moist, because dry air irritates your sinuses, causes congestion and increased mucus production and can result in a sinus infection.
  • Using an over-the-counter irrigation kit- to irrigate your sinuses which keep your nose clean and free of mucous, so bacteria won’t multiply and cause a sinus infection.
  • Washing your hands frequently and keeping your hands away from your face, eyes, nose and mouth- to prevent the spread of bacteria and germs in your body.

If you smoke, you should try to stop because smoking irritates your sinuses and increases mucus, which provides a perfect place for bacteria to thrive. You should also try to avoid alcoholic beverages because alcohol swells and irritates your sinuses, which can result in an infection.

A great way to avoid infections, in general, is to keep your immune system working at its peak by taking vitamins. Make sure you have adequate amounts of vitamin C, minerals and antioxidants from fruits and vegetables. Get your exercise, and try to lower your stress. If your immune system is working, it can fight off potential viruses that can give you a sinus infection.

Sometimes no matter how much you try to prevent a sinus infection, you get one anyway. If you get a stubborn sinus infection that doesn’t go away and doesn’t respond to home therapies, it might be time to seek out Dr. David Sycamore, at Parkway ENT and Allergy in Katy, Texas.
