Find out the telltale signs that it’s time to get professional help for your allergy symptoms.
The bad news is that about 20 percent of people will develop allergies during their lifetime. But the good news is that your Katy ENT doctor Dr. David Sycamore knows exactly how to treat your symptoms and get you back to enjoying life without those red itchy eyes and frequent sneezing.
What are the most common allergies?
Your symptoms could be due to any one of these common types of allergens:
Pollen: Pollen is produced by trees, flowers and grass, and can cause some pretty unpleasant seasonal allergies. While not dangerous, symptoms of a runny nose, watery, itchy eyes and sneezing can be annoying for anyone.
Animal dander: Secreted by your pet’s skin and saliva, this allergen may take years to develop and the symptoms are similar to pollen allergies. By using a HEPA filter, cleaning surfaces regularly and keeping some rooms like your bedroom off limits to your pet you can keep animal dander symptoms down.
Dust mites: These microscopic bugs that live in our houses can cause nasty allergies for some. That’s why it’s important to keep surfaces dust-free and to wash bedding in hot water every week.
Mold: Just like dust mites, mold can be microscopic. Mold is often found in moist, warm and damp areas like basements or the bathroom. If you suffer from mold allergies it’s important to make sure that your bathroom and basement have good ventilation. Also be aware that raking leaves or cutting grass can also kick up these allergies so be sure to wear a mask and protective clothing.
Food: Many people with food allergies find that they have sensitivities to things such as dairy, shellfish or nuts. People can develop allergies for just about anything but these tend to be the most common food allergies. If you experience nausea, vomiting and other gastrointestinal issues right after eating then you may be dealing with a food allergy.
